Common AV Fails And How To Overcome Them

Even in this day and age an AV supplier, audio-visual kit can fail. It’s every event host’s worst nightmare – and it happens all too often for AV suppliers. We’ve all experienced that uneasy moment where the presenter wrestles with the equipment in an attempt to restore the picture and sound… the audience left sitting there, unsure of what to do or say. Not only does it feel awkward, it looks unprofessional – which is why it’s crucial to learn how to overcome AV hiccups.

As a leading AV supplier for live events and conferences, we know a thing or two about what’s required to keep AV firing on all cylinders. Below is a list of how to survive their common failures:

1. Getting the aspect ratios wrong

If your equipment isn’t set up with the right screen adjustments, you’ll end up with wonky ratios – which can result in thick black lines stretching across the screen. This is not only distracting for the audience, it can be off-putting for the presenter, with images and content moving around in unpredictable fashion.

Take the time to understand what ratios are required beforehand, as this will allow for appropriate formatting when constructing the presentation.

2. Miscounting the inputs and outputs

It’s so easy to miscalculate the number of ports your event will require – which is why you need to rigorously check you have all the inputs/outputs you need before you begin. You may wish to stream your presentation over multiple screens, for example, and this is something you should discuss with both your supplier and event host in advance.

Consider having a simple backup screen in place too. This way, if everything that can go wrong does go wrong, you have a Plan B ready – meaning you won’t be forced to cut your presentation short.

3. Underestimating set-up time

It’s always better to be waiting around for your audience than leave them waiting for you. Be sure to set up hours before kicking off, testing each screen and sound source on several occasions, and running through the presentation a couple of times to ensure everything is A-okay.

You can’t hide a lack of preparation during an AV show. Put yourself in the best possible position by getting ready as early as you can.

4. Going Cheap

It’s natural that you want to save money wherever you can. But you should never skimp on AV equipment. Cutting corners and going for the cheapest option available is invariably a bad idea, as budget tech can cut out in the blink of an eye without any prior warning.

Invest in some quality AV kit you can trust. The confidence you’ll receive as a result will shine through during your event.
